Colombia

Liz and I spent the day riding around through the Andy´s.  We started at sea level and a few hours later we were over 10,000 feet.  It is pretty amazing to bike up into the clouds, then through them and come out on top.  I don´t think that our bikes were upright for hours.  It is just corner after corner.  Liz and I have both fallen in love with Colombia.  Its a spectacular country.  Colombia like so many other Countries has a lot of unemployment.  Now in these countries there is very little government assistance, and people need to live, so as a result you get a huge amount of the population self employed.  Its neat to see the things people do to get by.  There are people walking around selling paintings that they have done, selling jewlery they have made.  My favourite is the guys that walk around with thermos´ full of coffee.  A few days in Cartagena and I didn´t have to look for coffee anymore.  I would step foot out of my hotel and guys would just run up to me.  The first one to get to me got my bussiness.  Colombia has had the best coffee to date.  The other thing that is very noticable about Colombia is the people.  I think Colombians are the friendliest people we have come into contact with.  Everyone seems to want to talk to you, or just say hi.  You make friends in minutes here.  We are just loving it.  I think the frist thing that we noticed about Colombia was the amount of motorcycles.  There is more motorcycles here then cars.  You can hire a moto taxi in seconds and they are cheap.  Mind you, they drive like maniacs (as do we) but i wouldn´t get on one.  Going to Colombia you expect the worse, people are going to kidnap you, kill you, or rob you.  Colombia is a dangerous country but it seems to be very isolated to spacific areas.  We have not felt like we were in danger yet, and we cant say that for a lot of the countries we have travelled through.  We are in Medellin, Colombia right now.  The city is built up into a mountain and the center sits in the valley below.  At night time when all the lights are on its looks like stars are covering the mountians.  Its just spectacular.  We are trying to make it to Peru in the next 8 days to meet my parents, but we are running behind.  Its just way to hard to leave this country.
