Costa Rica...

This was the road we were riding on.  The guys ahead in the photo stopped working and made a small temporary bridge for us to get over the huge trench they had just dug.

The last time that we made a post we were waiting in Nicaragua for me (caleb) to get a new rim for my bike.  Well Monday came and they couldn’t find a new rim.  So I had done some work on my bike and managed to get the back wheel straight enough to ride on.  We made it to Costa Rica, and found the Kawasaki dealer in San Jose.  We dropped off our bikes and when into the city for the night.  We both felt a little strange not having bikes with us, and not being able to see them.  But we made due.  So we got the bikes serviced.  I got an oil change done, the adjusted my valves, balanced my back tire, and cleaned our bikes like crazy.  The must have gone into the engine with cue tips to get it that clean.  They did an oil change for Liz, and put in a new air filter.  Our bikes haven’t been that clean since they were new.  Liz and I had no intentions on cleaning them until our return in April.  So it was quite the sight for us.  The mechanics in  San Jose were pretty interested in Lizs bike because they don’t have Super Sherpas in Central America.  Anyway so we took our bikes the next day and drove to Dominical.  This was the fist place I went to in Costa Rica four years ago when I was traveling with my best friend Tom.  Liz and I took the long way there, we drove dirt roads, and mud roads the entire way.  It was awesome.  At one point we got to a bridge that was out and had to go though the lake.  We had our bikes half deep in water and had to keep them full throttle just to keep them upright.  It was so much fun.  By the time we made it to Dominical (200km) the bikes and us were filthy.   The mix of water, then dust, then mud really can do a number on the looks of you and your bike.

This was our home for the last 5 days.  You can't really see it but the whiteness infront uf our tent is the Ocean.  The warm, beautiful, Ocean. It was great.

We had only planned on staying in Costa Rica for the time it would take to bike through it (3 days tops) but once we setup camp right on the beach it was hard to leave.  When Liz and I got to Dominical it was dark, so we began the task of locating a nice place to camp out. We found the perfect one… we setup camp and then went to bed.  It was great and then the tide came in.  We were a bit close.  I woke up at around 2:00am, to find the Ocean about 5 feet from our bikes.  I woke Liz up and we began the task of moving camp.  It took a while because the ground was soft from the rain and my bike kept bogging down in the sand.  But we managed to get out of the way of the ocean and got back to bed.  So 5 days later we found ourselves still on the beach.  Burnt to a crisp, and sticky and tight from the endless swimming in the ocean and not having a shower.  So we opted to get going.  It was nice to finally stay in one place for a while.  We had campfires ever night and made some friends while we were down there.  We biked down to   San Isidro today and got a room for the night.  We plan on crossing into Panama tomorrow, and getting to Colon as fast as possible.  I get sea sick, and Liz and I both hate fish so we don’t want to spend Christmas on the boat going around the Darien.  So if we bike like crazy people we may just be able to make it to Colombia for Christmas, or at least for New Years Eve.

And please email us, its really sad to check your email and not have any.  It makes me depressed and Liz is tired of me crying all the time.  She said she is going to go home if I don’t stop crying but its hard when you don’t get any emails. I know Liz is sad to but she is way to tough to show it.  What is the point of traveling if nobody cares your gone… (just joking) but really do send us emails!

Thanks,

Caleb Dykstra
